I'm New

Church of the Savior is a community of Christ followers who gather to experience the healing grace of Jesus and equip each other to share it with others.

Our location is at 1855 N Hickory Rd, South Bend, Indiana 46635. We're on the corner of Hickory and Hepler.

Our worship services are at 10:30am on Sunday morning and last about an hour. Plan to stay afterward for coffee and cookies.

For parents: During the service there is nursery for the littlest ones, and kids who are in prekindergarten through second grade can leave the adults part way through and go to their own worship areas. Parents are encouraged to follow their kids so they know where they are and where to pick them up. (All caretakers and teachers have passed a background check.)

For more information you can check out the FAQs below, look around the website, or contact us. We hope you join us!

Frequently Asked Questions

If you haven't found what you're looking for on our site, see if the information is here:

I've never been to a church before. What do I need to know?

First, know that you are welcome. We will be glad to see you, whether you've never been to church or come from another Christian tradition . More specific information is available below, but in general our church services are a quiet and reverent space. There are times we sing or that we say words together; otherwise, we are quiet to listen to what is being said and allow others to listen. We try to make it easy for newcomers by always letting people know when to sit or stand; when to say something or sing.

Do I need to let anyone know that I’m there?

Not really. It’s great if you let the greeter know that you are new so they can welcome you and answer any questions you have, but you can also find your own way to the sanctuary if you’d like.

How will I know what to do in the service?

A bulletin with an outline of the service is available at the entrance to the sanctuary. Everything that we do is announced and/or displayed on large screens. If you're really not sure, it's ok to ask someone.

Do I have to sing or say anything?

Not if you don't want to! Our services do include times where we all sing or say words together, but if you would like to just listen, that is fine! No one's going to mind (or probably even notice).

When does it start? Do I have to come early?

Our Sunday service starts at 10:30 am. Other events start at various times and you can find them on our Calendar page. Coming a little early (10 minutes) is appreciated.

How long will it last?

Most of our services are done in about an hour. You can expect about 20 minutes of singing and liturgy, a 20-minute sermon, a 5-minute congregational prayer, and another 10 minutes or so of singing and liturgy. When we celebrate Communion, it will be a little longer. (You can always check out our services on YouTube.)

Do I have to stay the whole time?

It is normally expected that you will be there for the whole service. If you do need to leave, just exit the back of the sanctuary quietly.

Can I bring food or a drink into the sanctuary?

It would not be usual to bring food into the sanctuary, although you may enjoy some candy or mints. It’s fine to bring a drink with you if it is in a cup with a lid.

Is there enough seating? Where do I sit?

Except for maybe Easter Sunday, there is plenty of room in the sanctuary. There are no saved or reserved seats, so you may sit anywhere without worrying about taking someone else’s regular spot.

Where do my young kids go?

We have a nursery for toddlers and babies if you would like to have them cared for there. We run background checks on all our volunteers and follow a safe church policy. You may also take your children with you into the sanctuary. Some noise is fine; if your child is crying loudly, it is appreciated if you take them out of the sanctuary. There is seating in the atrium.

Do I have to dress up?

We have a pretty casual dress code. That means most of us are wearing slacks and dress shirts or sweaters. Jeans are fine too. It’s also fine to wear a dress or a suit and tie if you want to!

Do I have to give any money?

No, not if you don’t want to. When we collect the offering during the service, you can simply pass the offering bag without putting anything in it. (Incidentally, the people in the pews pass the bag themselves, so if you get the bag at the end of the pew, just pass it to the person behind you.) If you would like to give money, you can put cash or checks in the bags that go around or give electronically with the QR code in the bulletin.

Is there anything else I should do?

It is appreciated if you turn off or silence your phone and put it away. After the service, please feel free to introduce yourself to those who were sitting around you or in the atrium while having a coffee. Don't hesitate to ask questions; our members and staff welcome questions and the opportunity to make you feel comfortable.

How do you serve Communion? What happens? Who can participate?

We generally have people come to the front, pew by pew, to receive the bread and juice. If you’re not sure when to go, just follow the people in front of you. (And it doesn’t matter if you go out of order.) We always have someone who walks through the sanctuary to serve anyone who finds walking to the front too difficult. If they miss seeing you, just wave to get their attention. Anyone who follows Jesus and knows they need his saving grace is welcome to take communion. If you do not take communion (for any reason), you are invited to come forward with everyone else to receive a blessing instead. As you reach the server, cross your arms across your chest and the server will know to offer you a blessing. You may also remain at your seat.

How accessible is the building?

There are no stairs or steps to enter the building or within the building. There are no automatic doors, but we are working on it and people are glad to help. There is a private wheelchair-accessible bathroom, and there are various spots in the sanctuary for wheelchairs and walkers without having to sit in the aisle.

Is there easy parking?

Yes! We have an ample parking lot right next to the building. There is also a drop off area on the east side of the building for those who have trouble walking.

Do you have a hearing loop?

Yes! We have a standard hearing loop which can be used with most hearing aids.

Do you cancel for bad weather?

Yes. If there's bad snow or ice, we will cancel the worship service (or other events). The decision is made early Sunday morning. Look for a notice on our homepage, and a notice will go out on our email list. (If you're a regular attender, you can get on the list by contacting our office.)
